Mungo's GOTS-certification
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a globally recognized certification standard for textile products produced from organic fibres. It assures environmentally and socially responsible practices throughout the entire supply chain, right from the harvesting of the raw materials to the finished product.
GOTS sets strict environmental criteria that pertain to the use of non-toxic materials, renewable energy sources and the treatment of wastewater. It has bearing on the full chain of production and the packaging of materials used – from the use of chemical products, oils, dyes, waste management, through to labelling, packaging and distribution. Additionally, it provides stringent regulations with regards to social criteria, such as fair labour practices, and safe working conditions for workers.
Are all Mungo products organic? Are they all GOTS certified?
No, not all of our products are organic or certified. We have a number of certified organic products in the range, and will look to add more in the future. We are transparent about the fact however, that other products in our textile range are woven with regular cotton. We also weave with OEKO-TEX-certified linen – itself a considerably low-impact, and highly sustainable fibre.
Following ongoing annual auditing, we are proud to say that our weaving mill, based in Plettenberg Bay, is GOTS-certified – the first of its kind in South Africa.
We will continue to look for ways to innovate and refine our processes to ensure an ethical, considered approach to production.
