The word kikoi (or kikoy) derives from Swahili and means ‘wrap’ or ‘something to wrap around you’. The name itself denotes the versatility of this piece of apparel – this cotton kikoi can be used as a sarong, skirt, baby sling, towel, scarf, shawl, head wrap, dress, and so much more. A useful item that once you own you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it!

The kikoi originated on the African east coast, particularly Kenya and Tanzania, but is now ubiquitous across the continent. Traditionally the kikoi was made from hand woven cotton, in brightly striped colours.

The Ruti Kikois are woven on our antique shuttle looms from pure cotton grown in Southern Africa. Being woven on a shuttle loom means our cotton kikoi features a true selvedge, the unique non-fraying edge particular only to looms that use a shuttle. Cotton is also a wonderfully breathable fabric, meaning your cotton kikoi can be used year-round – a light and breezy sarong in summer or an added layer in winter. A strong colour fastness means your cotton kikoi will stay vibrant for years to come.

This lightweight garment can easily be slung over your shoulder for a day at the beach (or around your waist post swim), laid on the grass for a summer picnic, flung over the couch for a vibrant pop of colour, wrapped around your neck to stave off the chill or used to create the perfect up-do. Honestly, the possibilities are endless!

Featuring a classic fringed edge.

A vibrant and versatile item made at the Mungo Mill in South Africa.

  1. The large size

I love these! They are nice and big, the fabric feels amazing and the colours don’t run when you wash them. I use them at the beach, as a scarf and even as a towel for my yoga mat. Perfect!
