At Mungo we believe in using natural fibres. We stand by upholding the standards of good design, by using quality threads to produce a quality product. We also believe in weaving our products with integrity and transparency – which is why we opened our own mill. And then opened our mill to the public.
We commit to ‘doing our bit.’ That’s why we donate 1% of our annual turnover to MOVE, our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative aimed at uplifting the Plettenberg Bay community in which our production process is based.
Cotton
Cotton is derived from the soft, fluffy seed hairs of the cotton ‘boll’, and is transformed into fibre through a meticulous process of harvesting, ginning, carding and spinning. Loved the world over for its softness, durability, breathability, and versatility, it’s little wonder this humble, yet highly influential plant has been nicknamed ‘white gold.’ Mungo sources its cotton from Southern Africa, where it’s woven into our range of heirloom-quality homeware textiles at the Mungo Mill.
Linen
Linen is derived from the fibre of the flax plant, and is transformed into fibre through harvesting, retting, scutching and combing, before being spun into golden-grey threads. At Mungo we believe that linen’s qualities are unmatched: inherently luxurious, breathable, and strong, with a soft, pearlescent sheen that earned it the name ‘woven moonlight’ from the ancient Egyptians.
Linen’s environmental impact is minimal; the resilient flax plant thrives in poor soils with little chemical interference and requires minimal irrigation. We source our linen from France and Belgium, where the optimal climate and rich soil yield some of the finest flax. The spun yarn is then processed by renowned Italian spinners and woven into our premium textiles and bedding at the Mungo Mill.
